“1/8 of Earth” is an independent documentary cycle about the people shaping the country’s future through its key industries
An honest attempt to understand how Russia works today, and a method of searching for a big idea through those who change its reality with their work, thinking and decisions.
At the centre are the visionaries. People without whom whole industries are already unimaginable: agriculture, medicine, industry, education, technology, culture.
Victoria Saltykova travels across the country, from laboratories and universities to factories and space facilities, to see for herself who drives change and what the country can truly rely on.
Each feature-length film is a study of one industry through the people without whom it is impossible to imagine.

Why I make this cinematic study
A method for finding a person’s big idea
Hello! My name is Victoria Saltykova. For me “1/8 of Earth” is a method for finding a person’s big idea.
What drives those who change industries and the country? Where does their inner foundation come from? How do they make decisions, withstand the scale, make mistakes, keep going and still create? And, ultimately, who are we?
I believe the future is created by specific people. Those who change reality through their work every day: in fields, laboratories, universities, workshops, hospitals, on production lines and in places a camera rarely reaches.
So I go to them myself. I watch. I listen. I ask questions. I try to understand how it all works from the inside: through work, thinking, choice and responsibility.
“1/8 of Earth” continues what I have done all my life: it explores a person’s connection with their roots, their work and their future.
My books are about this. “Project Life” is about this. And so is this cinema.
